We worked with a freelancer last year. He was an idiot. We had a partner once. He was a jerk.

Both proved to be reasonably successful for business and here is why:

Consistency.

While the freelancer was an idiot, he was a consistent idiot and the cost of his incompetence was baked into his rates. Naturally we removed him immediately from our roster but we did not write him completely off. By working with him, we whittled down the mistakes and actually improved his efficiency and output. We did not pay until we had perfection, which eventually, he delivered.

Geniuses should be so gracious.

And about the jerk. Well, if the current political climate is any indication being a jerk consistently pays dividends. Most of all you can depend on jerks to be decisive if nothing else and you can bake that into your expectations.

The really stupid people in business figure they can work with pristine brainiacs and hire HR firms to spend months and months winnowing out thousands of candidates only to find that once you hire such a person, well, even they need to be managed. What's worse is the kind of indecisive competent that is either unsure of their decisions or too arrogant to learn. Moral of the story: be prepared to manage what you have, recognize the risks, and plan accordingly.

Unless you are perfect.

And see how that flies.
