We worked with a big company "skunkworks" once and it "whiffed." The main issue stemmed from thinking they could gain meaningful insights from 300 users with wimpy session times and big bounce rates. We could not help them because they were thinking too small for an available audience of 50,000 plus.
But it gets worse, once you consider that this corporation had spent over nine months dinking around with their paltry "prototype" site. That means the 300 "users" were very likely unproductive. And unproductive people get fired in business.
For a potential audience of 50,000 users (not large, but a predictable size) we would recommend a bare minimum of 5000 users, under 30% bounce rates and long session times before you can get any real work done. And this is real traffic, not crap.
The metrics above have been achieved exclusively through growth hacking and ZERO marketing. We are now ready to get really serious with KISSMetrics to measure people and not just page views. Keep in mind, however, that you need page views to measure before you waste time with people.
